Project Description

In the Internet Safety Lesson, the candidate will design a grade-appropriate lesson to promote the essential skills a digital learner needs to create and maintain a safe learning environment. This particular lesson is targeted to 7th grade students (though would be applicable for any of the middle grades). Of the many facets of Internet safety I could have focused on, I opted to concentrate on cyberbullying, a trending topic in schools and society today because I feel that few students know the many forms that cyberbullying can take. Likewise, students that are being cyberbullied may not know how to seek help from adults both in and out of school.

Process

I selected resources that are familiar to and liked by my students. Likewise, I kept in mind the fact that I would be teaching this lesson to Social Studies students who have an interest in current events, so I needed to keep the information relevant and engaging. After searching through volumes of material on the subject, I kept coming back to the BrainPOP resources for these very reasons.

Reflection

Without a doubt, students have some understanding of what cyberbullying is; what they may not realize is that they may have unknowingly been a cyberbully. This lesson aims to raise awareness of cyberbullying and instruct students on how to respond to cyberbullies. In the end, students will have a better understanding of the many methods someone can be cyberbullied, as well as the legal obligations of a school to deal with cyberbullying issues. This lesson aims to help students understand that adults are a valuable resource for students who are cyberbullied and helps these same students to identify ways to save evidence of cyberbullying to present to adults.
